‘We Killed Mangy Dog’ @ Maputo Winter Theatre Festival

The João Garcia Miguel Company will present the play ‘We Killed Mangy Dog’ at the International Winter Theatre Festival in Maputo at 7:30 p.m. on June 23 and 24 in the Teatro Gil Vicente and Teatro Avenida respectively.

‘We Killed Mangy Dog’ is inspired by the book of the same name by the Mozambican author Luís Bernardo Honwana. Written in 1964, this book is considered one of the foundation stones of modern Mozambican literature. Despite the various situations and emotions of incomprehension, social injustice, alienation and dis-alienation of dream and reality, the “violent social structures” it depicts are able to engage and move the reader with affective energy through its extraordinary capacity for persuasion.

Founded in 2002, the João Garcia Miguel Company is a collective means of contemporary artistic creation that researches artistic and creative development in the performing arts. In the company’s trajectory, the search for a difference, a singularity, accompanies each new creation.

Its productions have won awards several times, most recently the 2014 SPA Prize for the Best Theatre Performance, with its piece ‘Yerma’. The company is financed by the Government of Portugal, the Secretary of State for Culture and the General Directorate of the Arts. Its participation in Mozambique’s Winter Theatre Festival has the support of Camões – Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo and an award supporting the internationalisation of theatre from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

‘We Killed Mangy Dog’ is based on the original texts ‘We Killed Mangy Dog’ and ‘Inventory of Furniture and Effects’ by Luis Bernardo Honwana. Direction and screenplay by João Garcia Miguel, with interpretation and co-creation by Sara Ribeiro and António Pedro Lima. Music: Ricardo Martins and Joana Guerra.
