Mozambique: President to work in Gaza from today
O País / Ministry has reportedly offered a 5,000 MT contribution to funeral expenses of Hermínio dos Santos
Hermínio dos Santos was a controversial man with strong convictions, who led many demonstrations demanding improvements in the pensions of demobilised veterans.
Dos Santos was arrested several times and never bowed before the authorities, but could not resist the illness that left part of his body paralyzed on June 6.
At the hospital, he was diagnosed with high blood pressure and hospitalised for a few days. He was discharged last week, but reportedly relapsed and died at dawn on Friday.
Family members say that Herminio had not been in good health for the past six months. Stricken by this further misfortune, the family of the former combatant complain of the lack of assistance from the Ministry of Combatants.
The son of the deceased, Angachero Hermínio dos Santos, told O País newspaper yesterday that the ministry had promised only 5,000 meticais as a contribution to the funeral expenses.
Relatives said they had asked to meet the minister on Monday, but feared they would not be received on the grounds that dos Santos was a member of the opposition.
Friends and colleagues describe dos Santos as a brave man and promise to continue to fight for the rights of demobilised combatants
In 2016, dos Santos created the Humanitarian Party of Mozambique, of which he remained president until his death. He leaves 10 children and two widows.
