The historic victory of the Mozambican national soccer team the Mambas over Zambia in the first official Group K qualifying match for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (CAN) led the President Filipe Nyusi to compliment the players and their coach.
“I want to send a special message to coach Abel Xavier, because he has been humble and in a humble way, transmitted human warmth to the players, with motivation and the will to win, regardless of the opponent,” he said.
The head of state praised the players and the Football Federation. “Ratifo’s goal in Ndola is, in the end, everyone’s. The players did their best and made history,” he said.
Filipe Nyusi later said the government would continue to support the Mambas, “especially in hard times”.
Mozambique will play Guinea-Bissau in September in the second qualifying round for CAN-2019, the final of which will take place in Cameroon.
