Mozambique’s military chief says the situation in the country is “very calm”

The chief of staff of the Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM) has said that the situation in Mozambique is “very calm”, following the implementation of the truce ordered by Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama.
Graça Chongo was speaking to journalists in the Angolan capital, where he is attending the joint meeting of the chiefs of staff of the armed forces of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Chongo said there were still problems with the movement of people and goods on the country’s main north-south highway in Gorongosa in the centre of the country due to action by the National Resistance of Mozambique (Renamo), the country’s main opposition party.
“But at the moment the situation is very calm, because unilaterally the leader of the Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama, made a truce, ordering his forces to stop taking action at the level of the whole national territory,” he said.
