National AIDS Council urged to be more efficient

Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario on Thursday urged the National AIDS Council (CNCS) to be more efficient in its fight against HIV/AIDS by involving all segments of society in the efforts to reduce the impact of the pandemic.

Speaking at the Maputo ceremony where he swore into office the new executive secretary of the CNCS, Francisco Mbofana, Rosario expressed his concern at the increasing levels of HIV prevalence in Mozambique. The latest figures, released last month, showed a rise in HIV prevalence among people aged between 15 and 49 from 11.5 per cent in 2009 to 13.2 per cent now.

The Prime Minister declared that only with a coordinated effort between the government and all segments of society will it be possible to achieve success in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“The government will continue to expand the services to prevent and diagnose HIV, and increase the number of health units that are offering anti-retroviral treatment”, he said. “We shall promote dissemination of information about the disease to the population at large”.

Rosario stressed that, with the implementation of such measures, the basic conditions will be created for the CNCS to contribute positively to overcoming the challenges that still remain in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Mbofana, who was previously National Director of Public Health, said the struggle against AIDS must involve policies and strategies aimed at families and also the strengthening of communities.

“We have to expand our activity and use the district as a point of planning and action”, he said. “We have to strengthen communities so that they play an ever greater role in the collective efforts to win the battle”.

Mbofana hoped he could count on the collaboration of all sectors of Mozambican society in the fight against the disease.
