FAO truck attacked in EN1: UN implements travel restrictions in Mozambique

The UN has implemented travel restrictions on its personnel in Mozambique after a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) vehicle travelling between Gorongosa and Nhamapaza was shot at on Wednesday morning, February 17, by a group of unidentified gunmen.
The driver was not injured, but the vehicle had a punctured tire and bullet holes in the rear door.
The restrictions were issued internally by the UN’s Department of Protection and Security in Maputo to all UN staff, with VOA gaining access.
“This is a serious incident and while we do not have sufficient information on the circumstances surrounding the event at this time,, we are implementing travel restrictions with immediate effect for all field missions in Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambezia provinces,” the statement read.
The warning says that only essential tasks can be performed, and only with the permission of the Mozambique UN Department of Protection and Security.
The note also says: “Employees should be alert at all times, and, in case of disorderly conduct, resort to the nearest police station or UN office and report the incident.”
There is still no reaction from the national authorities on the incident.
