More than 120 South African and Mozambican entrepreneurs yesterday attended the second MOZEFO international conference in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The event was attended by the South African minister of industry and trade, Rob Davies, who highlighted in his speech the efforts of the two countries to facilitate business, mentioning meetings between the heads of state of the two countries that had adopted measures and policies to make life easier for investors.
Davies also cited meetings of the Joint Commission involving key ministries in cooperation between the two countries which had identified agreements that should be updated, like the 2005 Trade Agreement which needed revision to take current circumstances into account and cover new areas of trade cooperation.
Minister Davies also said that the two countries should encourage the private sector, and that that was the principal reason for his attending the conference.
Davies said that the Soico Group initiative would help cement relations between Mozambique and South Africa, and reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting SADC’s industrialisation strategy and saying South African had been trying to persuade industrialists to invest in countries in the region where there are opportunities, Mozambique being no exception.
Daniel David, CEO of the Soico group, said that the aim of the conference was to showcase opportunities in Mozambique and to improve the trade, cooperation and solidarity that has always characterised relations between both countries.
David said Mozambique was a country with a dynamic economy that was trying to diversify and develop a legal framework that protected and stimulated foreign investment.
Mozambique’s ambassador to South Africa, Paulino Macaringue, thanked the Soico Group for its efforts and said that the Mozambican government was doing all it could to attract investment, and hoped to build the country’s future hand in hand with its South African partners.
