Mozambique ready to “turn the page” – Salimo Abdula

Salimo Abdula, charman of Intelec Holding, said yesterday that Mozambique could “turn the page”, and go on to exploit its potential beyond gas, after it had made the hidden debts audit public and consolidated peace.

“Mozambique after peace is consolidated has potential beyond oil and gas,” Abdula told Lusa on the sidelines of the Horasis Global Meeting conference, which ended yesterday in Cascais.

“We can turn the page. There are already signs of stability after a very difficult period, with social problems, abductions, international crises, inflation and devaluation of the metical, and political-military instability,” the president of the Business Confederation of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CE-CPLP) said.

“In a matter of weeks, the Office of the Attorney General will produce an executive summary [of the Kroll report] for a better public understanding, and this will remove the uncertainty that there has been among investors and also in society itself, which is skeptical and wants to know what happened.”

Following the release of the audit, “the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and donors will be able to resume support for the general state budget,” he added.

According to Abdula, Mozambique is entering a new period: “The announcement of large international corporations such as Exxon Mobil and others coming to Mozambique is a very positive signs and we can already sense the return of other potential service providers in Maputo. This is the dynamic that everyone expects,” the former president of Vodafone Mozambique said.

Abdula argues that, with peace, the country acquires increased potential beyond the natural gas sector, such as agro-industrial production.

“We are very close to big Asian markets. We can produce for the international market, but it has to be through technology transfer in the agro-industrial process, not only agricultural production,” he said, adding that “beyond the agro-industrial sector, tourism is another area we must concentrate on.”
