Mozambique Elections: Some roads blocked in the capital

“If we cannot be the change, then we will have met in vain”, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi told the closing session of an extraordinary meeting of the Central Committee of the ruling Frelimo Party on Saturday night.
For two days the Central Committee had discussed the internal situation of Frelimo, the Party’s plan and budget for 2017, and the political, economic and social situation of the country. But, apart from the opening and closing sessions, the meeting took place behind closed doors. Only Central Committee members were in attendance – usually other senior Frelimo and government figures are guests at such meetings, but not this time.
Summarising the meeting in broad brush strikes, Nyusi said “Each one of us, at all levels and in all the bodies of Frelimo, has the responsibility to seek solutions for the concerns the people face in their daily lives. All of us, including those who were at home, and whom we represent here, are part of the solution to the problem”.
He praised “the free and open debate of ideas, the criticisms and the deep analyses of the situation of our party, of the country and the world”
Nyusi said he was leaving the meeting encouraged to continue the work he had been doing. “Here we have made our commitment, in the name of the people, to continue doing everything so that the results achieved so far in the dialogue for an effective peace in our country may prevail”.
He was referring to the talks between the government and the rebel movement Renamo, including his own frequent phone calls with Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, which have resulted in Dhlakama extending Renamo’s truce, first declared in late December, for an indefinite period.
“We must leave here as messengers of peace, of hope and of reconciliation”, Nyusi declared, “and we must transmit the message that the differences that separate us cannot divide a unitary state”.
This was just one stage in the journey, he continued, “since this type of reflection should be permanent, regular and flexible”.
“During the debates we gathered contributions for the stability and continual growth of our party”, Nyusi added. “They were salutary contributions that strengthen us as a political organization which directs the destinies of millions of Mozambicans”.
A final communiqué issued at the end of the meeting declared that Frelimo members must be held responsible for the Party’s performance by allocating specific tasks to each and every member.
The communiqué also praised the way party members had been working under adverse circumstances and encouraged them to continuing “setting this example of perseverance, thought and calm “.
It also urged Nyusi “to continue the efforts to re-establish effective peace and to pursue his style of leadership, seeking to achieve the economic and socio-cultural development desired by the Mozambican people”.
