Mozambique: President Chapo meets King of Spain in Seville
Noticias / Fernando Faustino addressing the Central Committee
National liberation struggle fighters addressing members of Frelimo Central Committee and its president, Filipe Nyusi, on Friday denounced the distancing of the “political battlefield” and “assault on the ranks of the party” by some “smart” members, infiltrating and occupying positions of prominence in the party.
In an unprecedented intervention at the opening of the Fourth Extraordinary Session of the Central Committee, ACLLN Secretary General Fernando Faustino said that new players in the national political scene, namely new political formations, governmental organisations and some civil society organizations, constituted a barrier to Frelimo continuing to communicate with the people it liberated.
Struggle fighters also felt that the debate of ideas that had always characterised the party when faced with challenges had tended to fall off. “It is obvious that Frelimo has become an electoral machine since, for some cadres, to go into politics means to seek positions in government or parliament, in provincial or municipal assemblies or curry state favour in business. Many Frelimo members are ashamed to show their colours and wear the shirt with the beautiful images of the drum and the kernell,” Faustino said.
He reminded comrades that Frelimo had won elections relatively easily, perhaps because of the experience accumulated over the years, and its members were proud to say that the party was a machine, something now barely acknowledged, especially in the central and northern provinces.
The secretary general of the National Liberation Combatants Association (ACLLN) said that Frelimo needed to wake up when, at major events such as congresses, conferences, elections and internal elections, some of its members sought to be part of the brigades simply in order to gain visibility with leaders at all levels so as to ensure confidence and influence within them.
He said that the ACLLN was calling for a fund reorganisation within Frelimo, to purify the ranks of the ruling party in a real, true, timely and unconcealed manner, in order to restore Frelimo’s dignity and value in line with the teachings of its first president and architect of national unity, Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane.
He indicated that rigour in the admission of new members and in the election of members of the party organs, from the cell to the Central Committee, could restore the trust that the people had always placed in Frelimo.
“Our people are accustomed to a Frelimo where their leaders speak openly and regularly with them. They learn with the people, hearing what they do not like to hear and listen to what hurts, but always with a view to finding solutions to the problems of society and not considering the leaders as an elite of big business people or high state officials, difficult to access.”
The ACLLN secretary-general said he hoped that the Central Committee would methodically point out the sure path towards prosperity that all should follow.
Messages from the other party social organisations presented at the time saluted the president for the efforts that he was making to secure effective peace and for the development of the country.
