A former Mozambican justice minister, Abduremane Lino de Almeida, will be tried for abusing his office and receiving undue remuneration, the daily Notícias reports, and the Kampfumo Judicial Court in Maputo has set May 31 as the date of the trial to begin.
Abduremane Lino de Almeida is accused by the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) of making a payment with public money to three persons who had no ties with the state aimed at a 21-day religious visit to Mecca. According to the GCCC, the amount involved totals 780,000 meticais (EUR 52,000.00).
Lino de Almeida stepped down as Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs in March 2016, one year after the investiture of Filipe Nyusi’s government following his victory in the October 2014 general election.
The GCCC process had already been instituted when he left office, according to news sources.
