Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party is holding district conferences throughout the country as part of the party’s preparations for its 11th Congress, scheduled for late September.
Addressing a Maputo press conference on Friday, the party’s spokesperson, and Central Committee Secretary for Mobilisation and Propaganda, Antonio Niquice, said the district conferences will be held this coming weekend. They will elect the party’s new district committees and secretariats “in an inclusive process”.
“We are urging our members to make these conferences a moment of festivity, and a moment for strengthening national unity, peace, and the gains of the Mozambican people”, said Niquice.
These conferences, he added, were preceded by wide-ranging debates on the Congress theses, in Frelimo branches, and in the party’s circle and zone committees. He regarded this procedure as “a strengthening of internal cohesion and a consolidation of inner-party democracy”.
Frelimo members and sympathisers, he said, are called upon to transform the conferences “into a moment of reflection on the deepening of peace, so that Mozambique can continue to set an example in the concert of nations”.
Contributions from party members and sympathisers, Niquice continued, will enrich the Congress theses, and the major questions they raised would eventually be included in a future Frelimo programme for governance.
The district conferences will be followed by provincial conferences in June, at which delegates to the Congress will be elected.
