“The president of Renamo and I do not want informal intermediaries” – Nyusi

President Filipe Nyusi yesterday began a three-day visit to the province of Maputo, starting with a visit to an agro-livestock fair and a popular rally in the village of Macaneta, in Marracuene district.

At the rally, groups sang songs demanding peace in the country, and the president, in his speech, tried to explain the steps that are being taken so that the guns would be silenced once and for all. He explained that teams nominated by the government and Renamo were discussing the decentralisation process and military issues, and would present solutions for effective peace in the country soon.

He also said that he and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama have been talking frequently, generating consensus for progress. But he warned: “I and the president of Renamo do not want informal intermediaries, those who want to look for answers about something they want to know about. If you want to help, show your face and participate in the process, do not disturb what is happening. Because if we want to make up stories, thinking that we’re helping, we’re putting pressure on, and you do not know what is it that people are negotiating. This is dangerous because it creates mistrust again and we are already leaving [behind us] this atmosphere of mistrust between Mozambicans.” The president did not specifying who was he referring to or who the people trying to interfere in the talks between the government and Renamo were.

“The hope of the people is being built. We believe that one day it will be clear that there is no war in this country. So we’re working, I do not need to be on the road running, take off my shirt and say that I’m talking. I am talking; is that not what the people want? The people want the result of what we are doing,” he said.
