South Africa’s Grain SA lowered its estimate for imports of maize to 3.8 million tonnes from a previous estimate of 5 million tonnes after the government’s maize forecast was higher than expected, the largest producer group said on Wednesday.
Grain SA economist Wandile Sihlobo told Reuters in an interview that the change in the import estimate was due to the higher-than-expected forecast 7.44 million tonnes of maize that the government expects to reap this year.
