South Africa’s import of natural gas from Mozambique halts in 2026 - Watch
Mozambique and the German Federal State of Saxony have just strengthened cooperation in the mineral resources and energy sector.
The intention was expressed yesterday in Maputo by Mozambican Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Letícia Klemens and the deputy prime minister of Saxony, one of Germany’s sixteen federal states.
The partnership includes, among others, the establishment in Mozambique of a rescue service centre and gas protection system; the development of an efficient, accountable, transparent and sustainable management structure for rescue operations with German companies participating in the design, planning, construction and start-up of rescue services, as well as the implementation of a notification system and incident alert at national and international levels.
According to Minister Leticia Klemens, achieving these goals will allow our country to improve governance of the extractive industry and accomplish a new vision of safe and sustainable mining.
“Cooperation with the State of Saxony has had very good results. We would like to see it expanded in order to continue our mission of managing mineral resources in a manner that will bring us the expected benefits of mining,” she said.
According to Klemens, Mozambique needs to accelerate the formation of a critical mass of human resources able to ensures the sustainable management of the mineral resources available and respond to the demand and the dynamism of the industry, particularly with regard to the workforce .
For his part, Martin Dulig stressed the fact that both sides have a successful partnership that comes from a distant period.
“Just remember the presence of Mozambicans who worked in the extinct German Democratic Republic (GDR), but also Germans who were in Mozambique. We have excellent cooperation that has continued since then with very concrete and very successful projects,” he said.
Martin Dulig said on the occasion that many Mozambicans know Freiberg “because of the Mining Academy [Freiberg University of Mining and Technology], its geological competence centre and also because of other companies that work in this area and made the world know and connect this issue of mining skills area. “
On the occasion, the German government official handed the gear and equipment for training rescue teams in case of mining accidents.
