The President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang, is visiting Mozambique for three days from Wednesday, at the invitation of President Filipe Nyusi.
The two statesmen have official talks on Wednesday, where they will address the strengthening of relations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation in the commercial, regional and international domains.
President Obiang’s Mozambican agenda includes the laying of a wreath in Heroes Square, and visits to the Port of Maputo, the Assembly of the Republic and Maputo City Council.
A major African oil producer, Equatorial Guinea has a population of nearly 800,000, and boasts the highest gross domestic product per capita in the African continent, and 69th in the world.
Equatorial Guinea is in West Africa. The island of Bioko (formerly Fernando Pó), in the northern Gulf of Biafra, houses the capital, Malabo. Other islands include Ano Bom, south of São Tomé and Príncipe, and Corisco, Elobey Grande and Elobey Pequeno islands (and adjacent islets) in Corisco Bay, off Gabon.
Equatorial Guinea has been a member of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) since 2014, after being accepted at the organization’s 10th Heads of State summit.
The country had to agree to implementing a number of demands to gain CPLP membership, which they were offered despite opposition from civil society organisations in Portuguese-speaking countries who accuse Obiang’s regime of human rights violations.
President Obiang is in Mozambique after meeting neighbouring Angola’s head of state, José Eduardo dos Santos.
