Mozambique: President meets with representatives of the Episcopal Conference, reaffirms commitment ...
The last municipal elections in Mozambique were held in 2013
The Mozambican cabinet this Tuesday set the date for the country’s fifth municipal elections for October 10, 2018.
“The Council of Ministers considered and approved the decree that, on the proposal of the National Commission of Elections [CNE], marks the date of the fifth municipal elections for October 10, 2018,” spokesman Mouzinho Saíde told press at the end of the meeting.
Under Mozambican electoral law, municipal elections are determined by the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
The last municipal elections in Mozambique were held in 2013, when the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), in power since national independence in 1975, won 50 of the 53 municipalities, while the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the third largest political party in Mozambique, won three.
The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) did not compete in the vote in protest against the electoral law, which they alleged favoured Frelimo.
In 2019, Mozambique will hold its sixth general presidential, legislative and provincial elections.
