Minibuses running limited service in Maputo and Matola

Semi-collective passenger transport in Maputo and Matola is operating with “My Love” open trucks and minibuses providing limited service.
A Maputo Folha reporting team polled the Green Zone, T3, Benfica, Patrice Lomumba, Zimpeto and Magoanine, and found carriers providing a limited service as a result of intimidation.
Operators were fearful after messages circulated on social media warning them not to operate on Monday on pain of having their vehicles vandalised.
One driver, Julinho, said he thought the messages were not written by transport associations but by “people of bad faith” who wanted to take advantage of the situation to commit acts of vandalism. “We want the police to assure us that we will not be attacked,” he said.
Police contingents are in fact stationed across Maputo and Matola cities in case of incident.
The Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Workers (Fematro) has distanced itself from the messages concerning an alleged strike by private carriers scheduled for Monday in Maputo.
According to Radio Moçambique, the association has appealed to private carriers not to join the strike.
Fematro President Castigo Nhamane said yesterday there were no grounds for a strike because the private sector and the government were already in talks to find solutions for the private transport sector.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique had also, according to Radio Moçambique, appealed to the population not to join the supposed strike but to go about their business normally.
Maputo PRM spokesman Orlando Mudumane added that the police would react ruthlessly to anything that threatened public order and safety.
