Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday assured victims of Cyclone Dineo, which struck the southern province of Inhambane on 15-16 February, that the government is attentive to their suffering, and that the damage done by the cyclone will be repaired as soon as possible.
Speaking on his arrival in Inhambane city for a two day working visit to the province, Nyusi said “We are looking at the schools, the health posts, the houses, the roads, the electricity installations. I’m saying that, after what happened, we are familiar with the matter, and we are willing to do everything so that, in a short space of time, we can restore everything that was destroyed”.
Nyusi assured the crowd that the government is mobilising financial and material resources to repair the damage done by the cyclone.
He recalled that, shortly after the cyclone, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario had come to Inhambane to witness the devastation. Now Nyusi himself was in the province “to express my solidarity”, he said. “We are now in the phase of mobilising support, so don’t lose hope. These are situations of nature which are sometimes unpredictable”.
The cyclone killed seven people, some of whom died when coconut palms fell onto their houses. Nyusi advised his audience not to plant coconut trees near houses, in order to avoid such events.
He also urged people living in flood prone areas to accept the advice from the authorities to move to safer areas. “This change is very important. It’s not good to be stubborn”, Nyusi said.
In addition to the seven fatalities, Dineo injured 96 people, 16 of them seriously. According to the statistics of the provincial authorities, the cyclone destroyed 33,712 houses and damaged a further 71,526. It also destroyed 1,692 classrooms and affected 72 health units. The cyclone wiped out 62,382 hectares of crops.
