Mozambique: Police station destroyed after operation against theft of fuel
O Pais / EMTPM workers say that since the company's management passed to the Municipal Council their rights are systematically violated
There was tension in the afternoon of Friday, at the headquarters of the public passenger transport company in Maputo. After a few hours of negotiation attempts, the company directorate requested a police force to disperse the workers who have, since Monday, halted activities.
Using tear gas and rubber bullets, the Rapid Intervention Unit forced the workers out of the company.
Saudósio Júlio has been a driver in the public transportation company for 20 years. During the confusion, he was hit with a rubber bullet in his leg and one of the striking drivers was taken to the police station by Criminal Investigation Police officers.
Part of the workers turned to the Human Rights League for legal assistance, but the person in charge was not there. Workers, mostly drivers, say they are fed up with the treatment they have been subjected to and are calling for government intervention.
The group also says that, ever since the management of the company was transferred to the municipal council, their rights are systematically violated.
Workers at the Municipal Public Transport Company have been on strike since last Monday due to wage and subsidy cuts.
