No lives were lost in last Thursday’s attack by gunmen of the former rebel movement Renamo against a police position at Nzero, on the boundary between Mopeia and Morrumbala distrits in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia, according to the Zambezia provincial police commander, Joao Mahungele.
Speaking at a Friday press conference in the provincial capital, Quelimane, Mahungele said one member of the newly created police unit to defend natural resources and the environment was wounded, and is currently undergoing medical treatment in the Zambezia Provincial Hospital.
Nzero is on the country’s main north-south highway, but Mahungele assured motorists there are no grounds for alarm, and traffic along the road is continuing normally.
Mahungele warned that the defence and security forces will not allow any repetition of this incident anywhere in the province, and he arged the Renamo militia to avoid actions that disturb the peace. Nzero is just 20 kilometres from Sabe locality, where Renamo boasts that it has set up a new military base, which it calls a “general staff headquarters”.
In the neighbouring province of Sofala, the police have denounced the kidnapping of a village chief by five armed men, believed to be from Renamo, The abduction happened on Saturday, at Nhungue village, in Maringue district. The armed gang also stole all the possessions of the chief’s family.
The police say this is the fourth such kidnapping in Sofala in the space of less than a month. Renamo gunmen are also reported to have attacked a position of the traffic police, in the Sofala district of Caia.
