As part of commemorations of Matola’s 44th anniversary as a city on the 5th of February, the municipality will ceremonially hand over five newly constructed or rehabilitated roads to residents this week.
The roads are the Avenues 25 de Junho, Namibia, Rua da Mutateia, Salinas and T3-Khongolote.
The roads apart, the new administrative post of Matola-Sede building will be inaugurated, constructed through a public-private partnership.
Speaking to reporters yesterday at the launch of the anniversary celebrations, the mayor of Matola, Calisto Cossa, said that this year the city council will carry on with the construction of infrastructure, especially roads and the new municipal council headquarters.
“We are carrying on with the construction and rehabilitation of roads because we want Matola to be a pleasant place to live, which proper access roads make possible. Improved roads also contribute to the greater availability of transportation,” he noted.
The anniversary theme is “Celebrating 44 Years of Participatory Municipal Governance”, which, according to the mayor, encapsulates the commitment the executive adopted at the beginning of its term: always to govern with the city residents in mind.
“It is a motto that also encapsulates our agenda for the year. I remind you that on the 4th to 6th of May this year, Matola will host the 16th Conference of the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy (OIDP), following our selection at the Madrid conference in Spain” Cossa said.
The commemorative program also includes a concert with national and international artists, athletics, basketball, football, volleyball and other sporting tournaments.
