A visit to the headquarters of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) in Maputo by the head of state began at precisely nine o’clock yesterday morning. Filipe Nyusi was there about 10 minutes, learning about the institution.
The National Directorate of Geology and Mines and the National Institute of Mines were the next stop on the president’s route. There, the president heard explanations of their structures and functioning.
President Nyusi then visited EDM (Electricidade de Moçambique), where he toured departments and had a brief talk with managers.
By mid-morning, the highpoint of the visit had arrived, with the Head of State inaugurating the new headquarters of the National Petroleum Institute and touring the building.
Following the guided tour, President Nyusi brought together the members of the Consultative Council of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy for a special session. The central message he intended to convey was that this sector should increase its contribution to the economy.
Behind closed doors for a little more than three hours, the president met the Advisory Council and made known his concerns about the level of debts accumulated by state-owned energy companies.
It was a half-day’s work the Head of State was said to have felt positive about.
