Mozambicans in South Africa are “fleeing” military census

The Mozambican government hopes to register 175,000 young people for possible service in the Armed Forces, not only in Mozambique, but also in the diaspora.

South Africa is home to the largest Mozambican community abroad, and most of them are youths of military age. Despite appeals, Mario Langa says, they say they are unaware of the call and are afraid to join the military in times of political-military tension.

Consulates, however, make it clear that young migrants have the right to request deferment if they are outside the country, but only after registering. Currently, notices are pasted in consulate windows.

Consulates say mobilizing young migrants for the South African military census is a task for community leaders, but these claim a lack of information, community leader Antonio Pinto says.

Without a military census card, young people cannot obtain documents necessary for employment in state institutions or even a driver’s license in Mozambique.
