Police in Beira have detained two Indians and one Pakistani for “continued robbery” and smuggling foreign currency to Asia in a fraudulent scheme that harmed their employers and fellow citizens.
The three were part of a group of six foreigners involved in a scheme to steal goods from businesses in Mozambique’s second largest city and send the proceeds to Asia.
The group worked in a warehouse, and diverted some of the products for resale, in some cases actually to their patrons’ potential customers, in a scheme thought to have been operating since 2014.
“This is a qualified robbery, or we can say that it is a continuous robbery, because the situation has been occurring since 2014,” Sofala Police press officer Sididi Paulo explained, adding that a case had been drawn up and would follow the procedures of Mozambican justice.
He went on to warn employers to vet employees thoroughly in order to prevent similar schemes harming the national economy in the future.
Three other members of the group, all of Indian nationality, escaped the police operation and fled to the Asian country where the proceeds had been sent.
