Mozambican President appoints seven Secretaries of State
O País / Simão Nhambi
In an interview with O País, researcher Simão Nhambi says that dispensing with international mediation in the political dialogue suggests that the head of state and the leader of Renamo enjoy a high level of mutual confidence.
“The departure of the mediators is a sign of rapprochement between the parties. This is a good thing. It means that, of those things that constitute a requirement for dialogue, most of them have already been granted,” Nhambi said.
For the academic, effective peace may be one of Filipe Nyusi’s best bets, and he does not believe that the head of state’s commitment in this matter simply aims to strengthen his power within Frelimo before the September congress.
“With President Nyusi or without him, the Mozambican people want peace. I think he’s working on that, because it’s part of his promises during his campaign. If he was elected, it is because the Mozambicans believed in his promises. If Barack Obama rescued the economy, Filipe Nyusi intends to rescue the peace. Each president seeks to leave his legacy. For example, President Guebuza left behind the legacy of large infrastructures. As for President Nyusi, we see efforts to restore peace, I think this is the main legacy that President Nyusi intends to leave,” Nhambi says.
The researcher took the opportunity to comment on the words of (Frelimo Secretary General) Eliseu Machava on Heroes’ Day, according to which we must put an end to the heroes of the war.
“This is the first time we have heard such a speech from a Frelimo secretary general. Saying that we must have an end to heroes of war means that we begin to feel a connection between what the president of the republic says and what his party thinks. This speech is very important in the context of talk of inclusion because there are many Mozambicans who do a great deal but are not recognized because they are not party members. It means that to make heroes we do not have to make war,” he concluded.
For the new phase of the dialogue, the government and Renamo have formed two small groups to discuss the decentralization of state administration and the integration of Renamo combatants into the Defence and Security Forces.
