Rolls-Royce unit eyeing Mozambican gas-to-power prospects
Mozambican UX Information Technologies was nominated a finalist for one of the most important competitions for start-ups in the African continent: the African Entrepreneurship Award. After successive rounds towards the full application, UX’s idea stood out as one of the “most sustainable and significant” among 37 other finalists, of a total of 197 that made it to the last round. UX has applied for the competition with Biscate (odd-job in Portuguese), an application that connects workers in the informal sector to clients through a hybrid technology, including SMS, USSD and Web, recently launched in Mozambique.
The final stage of the competition will take place between the 30th of November and the 5th of December in Casablanca, the Moroccan city, and shall include personalized training, a mock presentation (for preparation) to a jury panel, a final pitch to the jury and the award ceremony.
“It is with a huge satisfaction that we have reached this stage. Biscate has enormous potential and we will invest all our knowledge to serve the largest possible number of users, in Mozambique and, in the near future, across the continent, ” states Frederico da Silva, co-founder of UX.
A presentation of a prototype or samples of the products or services will be required from the 37 finalists spread across 22 African countries; and the winners will receive financial and technical assistance for the development and expansion of their businesses.
Biscate has already been awarded the best business idea by the Ministry of Science and Technology in Mozambique in 2014, and won two competitions for startups in the United States that same year.
Released three weeks ago, Biscate has registered to date more than 10,000 workers and 900 customers.
