Young Mozambican businessman Nelson Dias de Sousa has won the Tony Elumelu African Entrepreneurship Program award in the Advertising and Entertainment category.
The award is a Nigerian initiative spotlighting sustainable business ideas from young people from 54 African countries.
Thirty-two-year-old Nelson Dias de Sousa, who currently works as a sound engineer and music producer, has developed an advertising platform which consists of electronic billboards on recycling bins in airports, supermarkets and other public places. The young Mozambican noted that there is a disconnect in national airports regarding the collection of rubbish and the use of recycling bins to advertise, and after some research created the “Publicidade Aqui” (“Advertising Here”) project.
“‘Advertising Here’ consists of placing electronic publicity panels on recycling bins. These containers will be divided into sections for paper, glass and metal,” the entrepreneur explained. The separation of waste will reduce the time spent on collection and facilitate recycling, Sousa says.
The US$100,000 prize is to be used implementing the project. The first phase involves hiring 40 workers trained in computing.
