Last Wednesday, Mozambican Customs agents at the port of Beira in Sofala seized around 2,600 cartons of counterfeit sanitary pads and toothbrushes being imported from China. The products also reportedly had falsified production and expiry dates.
The owner of the more than 2,600 boxes of “Usual” brand sanitary pads was unresponsiveness up until the close of this A Verdade edition, while the company, “IvoneLisa”, which manufactures the product in question and has offices in the Mozambican capital, said that it was unaware of the matter.
When one of the containers of the goods was opened by the inspection team, it was found that the packaging declared it had been manufactured in China on 3 January this year, although the container was seized in the Port of Beira on 12 November.
The container took just over a week to get from China to Mozambique, against an average of 30 days. “We are more than certain that this is a counterfeit product. We have already opened a file on this case,” Customs spokesman António Camacho said.
The Somali citizen who owns the 48,000 toothbrushes, said that the ‘Goldengate’ brand product was not a replica of the ‘Colgate’ brand, contrary to what Customs claims.
