Five children died when they were buried and two others were injured when the crater they were playing in collapsed in the city of Nacala-Porto, Nampula province, last Saturday.
The tragedy happened in the Triangul neighbourhood as the children, whose ages ranged from eight to 13 years old, were playing in a crater declared out of bounds by some parents because of fears it was dangerous.
The Triangul neighborhood has chronic of soil erosion problems with no short-term solution in sight.
The seven children were playing with a ball when they were suddenly buried by earth thought to have been rendered unstable by recent rain.
National Service of Public Safety (SENSAP) personnel were quickly on the scene but could save only three of the children.
Four perished at the scene and the survivors were evacuated to Nacala District Hospital, where a fifth child died. @Verdade has learned that the two surviving children have been discharged from hospital.
