“Mares” is an album that displays the variety of creative and expressive resources of Portuguese contemporary composer António Chagas Rosa and simultaneously demonstrates the interpretive maturity and the constant capacity for renewal that the Drumming Grupo de Percussão has maintained since it was formed in 1999.
The work that lends the title to the disc was composed in 2009 and is dedicated by Chagas Rosa to the group. For the six percussionists, “Mares”, composed in 2009, is a triptych consisting of three pictures of maritime inspiration – Cliffs, Seahorses and Island of Mozambique – that describe the journey of a dolphin from the Portuguese coast to the island of Mozambique. Rosa’s intention in translating different “aquatic sound impressions through percussion instruments” was concretized through compositional options demonstrating the composer’s creative maturity. It emphasizes the exquisite control of textures and sound density, as well as the diversity of timbral resources.
The collaboration of the Drumming Grupo de Percussão with contemporary composers is demonstrated not only by the various commissions and premieres that the group has played in its 17 year history, but also by an interesting portfolio of albums among which stand out three monographic discs: “Pocket Paradise” (2009),”Step by Step” (2013) and “Mares” in 2016.
