One hundred and three medals, including 37 gold, 34 silver and 32 bronze medals, were won by Mozambican sportsmen and sportswomen in international events during 2016, with the bronze medal won by Edmilsa Governo at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro standing out.
The achievement was highlighted on Monday by President Filipe Nyusi in his State of the Nation address to parliament. The number does not include medals won by the team as the just-concluded Zone V Games of the Supreme Sport Council of Africa in Luanda, Angola.
To loud applause from the deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, Nyusi said that sport was a powerful instrument in the formation of a man, providing him with moral and patriotic values for his better functioning in society.
President Nyusi said the medals brought honor to Mozambique and raised the self-esteem of all Mozambicans, “making us all proud as a nation and as a people”.
Nyusi also referred to endeavours to take sports to the masses, highlighting the construction of a multi-use pavilion at the Pemba Sports Complex, which will increase opportunities for indoor sport in Cabo Delgado, and the rehabilitation of the Parque dos Continuadores, the “cathedral” of Mozambican athletics.
