More on owner of ‘Tiger Centre’ escaping kidnapping again – AIM report

A prominent Maputo businessman of Asian origin escaped kidnapping on Wednesday night, according to the Mozambican police.

Mahebub Gulam Rassul is one of the owners of the Tiger Centre, a large central Maputo store that sells electrical appliances. A group of criminals using two cars, a Toyota Surf and a Toyota corolla, attempted to abduct him at around 20.45 on Wednesday, as he was driving along Ho Chi Minh Avenue.

The vehicles used by the would-be kidnappers blocked Rassul’s advance. However, according to Maputo City police spokesperson Orlando Mudumane, a nearby police patrol spotted the attempted abduction and there was an exchange of fire between the police and the kidnap gang.

Mudumane said one of the criminals was seriously injured and dropped his pistol. The others dragged the wounded man into the Toyota Surf, and then fled. As they made their getaway in their two cars, the kidnappers hit two parked vehicles. Even so, they managed to evade police pursuit. The site of the attempted kidnapping is very close to both the Interior Ministry and the Maputo City Police Command.

The police say they are tracking down the kidnappers and have firm clues. “The characteristics of the vehicles are known and the police are working intensively to identify these individuals”, said Mudumane.

He confirmed that the cars are the same vehicles that were used in an earlier attempt to kidnap Rassul on 15 November. On that occasion the gangsters tried to abduct their victim in the basement of the Tiger Centre building, but were foiled by other people who use the parking facilities there.

The Tiger Centre is owned by Rassul and his brothers. The first time an attempt was made to kidnap a member of the family was in August 2012, when Gulam’s brother, Asslam was the target.
