The Mozambican Labour Inspectorate (IGT) has suspended 10 workers at the MIM company for working illegally in the country, the Mozambican Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity announced yesterday in a statement.
According to an IGT note sent to the press in Maputo, the workers, all Portuguese, were found to be working in contravention of the rules on the hiring of foreign labour.
“The inspection team that went to MIM Moçambique found that it had acted outside the law by hiring Portuguese workers who were not authorised when presenting the project to the CPI (Centre for Investment Promotion), which approves investment projects in Mozambique,” the statement says.
Under Mozambican labour legislation and in accordance with the proposal submitted to and approved by the CPI, MIM Moçambique should only have five foreign workers, but the IGT found 15.
“The remaining ten Portuguese citizens could only be hired under an authorisation system on the personal order of the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, after verifying that there are no Mozambicans with appropriate qualifications available to meet the needs of the labour market,” the note explains.
MIM Moçambique is an engineering company located in Beluluane in Maputo province, southern Mozambique.
