Businessman Fernando Couto received the African Leadership magazine’s Industrial Personality of the Year prize on Tuesday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The annual awards distinguish leaders and institutions on the African continent who stand out in the economic sector for their contribution to economic growth and development.
Couto was distinguished in recognition of the achievements of the Portos do Norte company both in its own right and as the agency responsible for the successful terminal and port management in Nacala, Nampula province.
Speaking after receiving the award from Sheikh Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, Couto said that the award was an encouragement and a stimulant to the Port of Nacala and Mozambique generally.
He said he was proud to have received the prize and called on the African continent to assert itself in the world market, even in the troubled context of today’s global economy.
“Political leaders, the elites and the business class will need courage to face this challenge. Otherwise, we can look forward only to watching the African continent return to a simple reservoir of raw materials, low cost, and without respect for the conservation of the environment,” he said.
The winners of the African leadership awards are selected from across the continent, attracting more than 250 entrepreneurs and professionals who, through their work, contribute to Africa’s economy.
The award ceremony was chaired by Sheikh Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, a member of the Dubai royal family and patron and chairman of the board of governors of the United Arab Emirates CEO Clubs. It was attended by the first ladies of South Africa, Bongi Ngema-Zuma, and Ethiopia, Roman Tesfaye.
Among those distinguished in previous editions are the former presidents of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete; Namibia, Hifikepunye Pohamba; and Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in addition to the celebrated Sudanese businessman Mo Ibrahim, the patron of his own leadership prize.
