The Mozambican Airports Company has decided to reverse its decision to eliminate free stay time in Maputo International Airport parking altogether, but has reduced it from 15 to 10 minutes, after which the user must pay the stipulated 25 meticais per hour fee.
The previously announced measure eliminating free parking was to have taken effect this Thursday, but company management says it had reassessed the decision and compromised by reducing the time from fifteen minutes to ten.
The Director of Airports originally argued for the measure on the grounds of maintenance of the broken gates, paperwork, the electronic system itself and increased costs as a result of the devaluation of the metical.
The airports administration says the measure could still be implemented at later date if a study being carried out reveals that there are conditions that can secure profitable management of the parking without harming the user.
The Maputo International Airport parking registers an average of 13,000 vehicles per month, of which only 10 to 15 percent pay fees. The rest go in and out with passengers or as a result of flight delays.
