The teachers of the Escola Comercial e Industrial (EICB) 25 de Junho in the city of Beira have been on strike since yesterday morning, protesting against non-payment of overtime for two months from 2015 plus September and October of 2016.
They say they decided to boycott marking exam papers since the 21st of this month as a way of pressuring the government to meet their demands.
The Diário de Moçambique learned that the teachers did not receive payment for services rendered in October and November of 2015, and feared that the same would happen in September, October and November of the this year.
Their reaction comes after the Provincial Directorate of Science and Technology Higher Education and Vocational Technical of Sofala issued a statement citing the country’s economic difficulties as the reason for not paying the subsidies.
The statement was sent in response to a teachers’ demand last September for an explanation of the non-payment of the subsidies into their accounts for the months in question.
The document, dated October 17 of the current year, is signed by director Ana da Graça Luís Ernesto, and says:
“The aforementioned Directorate acknowledges receipt of the Industrial and Commercial School 25 de Junho teachers’ expose, informing your Excellency that, given the current situation the country is experiencing, it advises those concerned to await the regularisation of the national economy.”
