The Government of India has donated US$10 million to Mozambique for the purchase of wheat, in support of the country’s battle against food insecurity.
Max Tonela, Minister of Industry and Commerce, received a cheque for US$10 million from the High Commissioner of India in Mozambique, Gaurav Shresth. in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in Maputo.
The minister praised the speed with which India had responded to the request for aid made in August this year and said the money would be used to buy wheat to supply bakeries around the country.
“This donation will be used to purchase wheat. The next step is to launch a public tender to determine the supplier,” Tonela said.
The Indian High Commissioner in Mozambique said that his country was pleased to help Mozambique, and noted in passing that India was investing in several areas such as the exploitation of mineral and energy resources and agriculture.
More than one million people are facing food insecurity in Mozambique as a result of the drought in the south of the country and floods in the north and centre.
