Mozambique: Special Holiday for the City of Quelimane

Teams from the National Institute for Standardization and Quality (INNOQ) have found irregularities in both the weight of pre-packaged products and the scales in Zimpeto wholesale market in Maputo.
The inspection operation took place yesterday morning and covered wholesalers and retailers alike. Products were chosen at random from stalls and trucks and weighed. Technicians found that some of the pre-packaged products, especially onions and potatoes, weighed less than indicated on the packaging.
According to INNOQ inspector Nizar Assane, vendors will initially only be required to rectify the irregularities, but punitive measures such as fines will be sent out over the next few days.
“The inspection will be of the lightning strike variety and will happen not only in Zimpeto wholesale market but at other commercial establishments as well. We want to make sure the buyer gets the amounts he’s paying for,” Assane said.
The inspection covers products that are most in demand during the festive season, such as potatoes, onions, carrots, peppers and tomatoes.
