Two girls from Chissungura, Joana Araújo, 14, and 13-year-old Ines Machava, have died as a consequence of a lightening strike while collecting mangoes in Mungassa, outskirts of Beira.
The incident happened around 8:30 am when the two friends and a survivor, Isabel Manuel David, aged 16, decided to go collect mangoes at the suggestion Ines’s older sister.
Isabel David, quoted in the Diario de Mocambique, said that when they returned from the Credelec sales outpost after having purchased electricity credit, her cousin Ines suggested that they go to her grandfather’s estate in the Mungassa neighbuorhood to collect mangoes.
Inês’s father, Rodi Manuel Machava, said that the sad news had surprised him, since he had telephoned his wife earlier to ask about the health of his children and was told that all was well.
Diário de Moçambiquehas has learned that medical reports suggest fright as the probable cause of death, since the bodies show no signs of burns.
