One AK47, two shotguns and 460 rounds of ammunition were unearthed in the backyard of a house occupied by two family members called Gilberto Carrelo, now detained, and Domingas Botao, in Beira city’s Palmeiras II neighbourhood.
The objects were hidden in a tube along with a five-litre can of lubricating oil. The police also arrested Joaquim António, who was digging the pit to bury garbage at Botao’s request.
Daniel Macuácua, a spokesman for police provincial command in Sofala, was quoted by Diario de Mocambique as saying that the arrest was made possible by a tip-off.
António claimed he found the guns and ammunition when he was digging a refuse pit and tried to inform the woman in the house, Domingas Helena Botao.
Domingas in turn said that as soon as she heard of the existence of weapons, she went and told the authorities, because she said they constituted a danger to the children and other occupants of the house. The authorities then removed the material.
