Roofs and electricity transmission stations and posts have again been hit by bad weather in Maputo city and province. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms arrived on Saturday night, just weeks after an identical storm caused deaths, injuries and damage to property.
The National Meteorology Institute (INAM) says Saturday night’s bad weather of was associated with the arrival of a cold front, preceded by a low pressure system.
Last Wednesday, INAM forecast above-normal rains accompanied by severe thunderstorms and wind gusting up to 60 km/h for Thursday to Saturday, and on Friday, social networks announced the approach of a storm associated with “cloud bursting”, a weather phenomenon of clouds dropping heavy rain and dissipating quickly.
Meteorologist Lelo Tayo explained that the weather system originated in a low pressure system crossing Maputo province, having initially lost its impact when entering the continental zone but intensifying over the sea with precipitation above 50 mm.
Between 6:00 and 10:00 pm, the administrative post of Mapulanguene in the province of Maputo and the city of Xai-Xai in the province of Gaza recorded moderate rainfall of between 10 and 35 mm.
INAM is forecasting showers and strong winds along the coastal strip of Gaza and Inhambane, Manica province, Tete and the Zambezi valley over the coming days.
