Avocado pear and lychee produced by the multinational Westefália Fruto de Moçambique in the districts of Macate and Báruè in the province of Manica will be exported to the European Union from next month.
Company spokesman Manuel Roriz told Noticias that everything was being done to make the deadline.
Westefália Fruto de Moçambique is developing a large fruit tree plantation in the Macate and Báruè districts of Manica province, based on funding with a majority contribution from the World Bank.
Recent data indicate that the company’s average production volume is around 100 thousand tons per year, with 75 percent of this being exported.
The overall financing of the project is estimated at US$31 million, of which US$25 million is for the lychee project in the Báruè district and US$6 million for avocado in Zembe, Macate.
The avocado pear project started in 2014, with 132 hectares of a total of 2,914 planned already planted. In number of trees, 53,856 were planted in an area fully covered by a high capacity irrigation network.
Roriz says the 250-hectare Lychee project would start next year, with the production resources currently being mobilized.
Product for export will go to the European Union, with which Westphalia has had commercial relations for 40 years, as well as African countries and South American countries such as Peru and Colombia. In Southern Africa, the main target will be Mauritius.
Westefália, which employs 146 workers, plans to extend its production to areas in Canda and Catandica in Manica, where the local population is expected to benefit from social responsibility projects funded by 10 percent of the unit’s income.
Economic players from various parts of the country and the world visited the Westefália farms a few days ago on the eve of the first International Forum of Agrarian and Fishing Business Owners in Gondola.
