Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential elections and expressed a desire to deepen Mozambique’s “excellent relations” with the United States during his term.
“I hope that during your term the excellent political and diplomatic relations between the United States and Mozambique will be strengthened and economic cooperation will be raised to new heights for the benefit of our two nations,” Nyusi said in a letter to Trump, released by the Mozambican Presidency.
In the letter, written in English, the Mozambican head of state expresses the wish to work with the President-elect of the United States “in order to develop the long-term partnership and achieve the sustainable development and prosperity of the peoples of both countries.”
Donald Trump won the US presidential election by reaching 289 electoral votes, against the 218 of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, contrary to what the polls predicted.
The United States announced a review of its bilateral support to Mozambique in May following the scandal of hidden debt in Mozambican public accounts, joining the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the group of state budget donors who also suspended financing.
The debts scandal took Filipe Nyusi to Washington in September to meet IMF Director-General Christine Lagarde and US Secretary of State John Kerry.
The United States presents itself as Mozambique’s “largest bilateral donor” with some US$400 million (EUR 365 million) annually, and has spent more than US$6 billion (EUR 5.5 billion) on development programs and the fight against high-impact diseases such as AIDS.
