Nearly 20,000 students from provinces in the centre and north of Mozambique are in danger of not taking this school year’s final exams due to political and military instability.
To minimise the impact of the situation, the education minister has instructed the Provincial Directorates of Education and Human Development to transfer students to safer areas.
Jorge Ferrao has decided that “No provincial or district director is allowed to take any vacation before ensuring that all the students take all the tests”.
Speaking on Friday on the sidelines of the opening of the National Conference of School Councils in Maputo, Ferrao warned that the 2nd and 5th grade and adult literacy and education tests must start by 14 November, two days before the end of the school year.
The education sector hope the measure will avoid poor exam preparation, keeping students in school. Seventh, 10th and 12th grade examinations will start on 28 November.
Regarding enrolment for the next school year, the Education Minister called on parents and guardians not to leave the process, which is scheduled for 31 December, to the last minute.
“There are already schools that have no vacancies and others that are available only because parents are waiting for the last day,” he said.
Ferrao warned he might limit any extension of enrolment, given that the school year starts on 20 January, a month earlier than usual. The education sector also hopes to finalise the composition of classes before the start of the school year in order to improve budget planning.
“We will not prohibit anyone from attending school, but we want the cooperation of parents to allow us to organise classes on time” he said.
