A Chinese national is being held in Nampula’s Police Station No.1 on charges of trafficking in semi-precious stones.
The individual was caught in Nampula International Airport in possession of 700 grams of semi-precious stones, about to leave for China. The stones were detected in a travel bag by scanners. Their variety and value have not been released.
The accused then allegedly tried to bribe the Mineral Resources and Energy inspectors and police agents who uncovered his activities, in what could be another crime on his charge sheet.
It is not the first time that a Chinese citizen has been arrested for the illegal possession of mineral resources, and the outcome of previous cases is hard to determine.
Nampula International Airport is considered one of the main springboards for the illegal export of mineral resources, A Verdade reports.
