The state-owned Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) is increasing the cost of electricity from today, a measure it says is necessary to ensure the financial resources necessary to provide universal access to energy by 2030.
Low-income consumers using less than 100 kW/hour/month and therefore on the social tariff will not be charged any more.
With this price hike, the citizen who consumes, for example, between zero and 100 kW / hour per month will continue to pay 107 meticais on average, but the one who consumes on average 200 kW /hour per month, paying on average about 560 meticais will have a additional cost of about 200 meticais and will pay for the same amount of electricity, 760 meticais .
Low-voltage agricultural tariff consumers will pay 1 metical more per kW/hour while those average and high-voltage agricultural consumers will see an increase of 1.42 increase per kW/hour. The average agricultural tariff increase is 0.69 meticais kW/hour.
EDM Chairman Mateus Magala has called on Mozambicans to remain calm in the face of the increases, pointing out that the new tariff aims to adjust the prices in the country as a means of financing the sector investment strategy.
