Residents in Maputo’s Malhangalene B neighbourhood say an abandoned construction site on Vladimir Lenin Avenue is being used as a hideout by criminals. The large excavation was sealed with corrugated iron sheets, but intruders broke in and have made the place a haven.
Residents complain of the constant theft of headlights from parked car and mobile phones from passers-by, and say the waste dumped on the site is a breeding ground for the flies that invade their homes.
In addition to garbage, car bodies can be seen inside the perimeter, along with clothes hanging in makeshift huts and cans being used as cooking pans.
Romao Mbanze, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 10 years, said the site is a huge risk, not only for the villagers but also for passers-by, while Malhangalene Community Security Council president Fenias Mandlate says that efforts to remove the alleged criminals from the site have failed.
“The Council and police managed to remove the individuals, but a few months later they were back again,” he said.
Mandlate says the building site isn’t the only place where criminals are finding refuge, citing public gardens and other small squares in the neighbourhood as similar locations.
