The Mozambique Youth Organisation (OJM), which is the youth wing of the ruling Frelimo Party, in the small hours of Sunday morning elected 35 year old Mety Gondola as its new general secretary.
The OJM Central Committee, itself elected a few hours earlier at the OJM Congress in the southern city of Matola, chose Gondola, giving him 68 votes (57 per cent) to 42 votes (43 per cent) for his sole opponent, Hendro Nhavene.
A third “pre-candidate”, Dalfino Guila, did not make it onto the ballot paper because he was not elected to the Central Committee, and was thus not eligible to stand. Gondola takes over from Pedro Cossa, who was not standing for a second term of office.
In brief remarks immediately after his election, Gondola promised to work with all young people in the country, in a spirit of union and social cohesion. The OJM, he urged, must now create a solid and united base, in order to carry out its goals in good time.
A few hours after his election, Gondola undertook his first task as General Secretary – laying a wreath at Maputo’s Monument to the Mozambican Heroes, on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the creation of the OJM.
