Mozambique: At least three die in shipwreck on Colovane River - AIM
Jornal Notícias / The Mondlane family.
The Mondlane family of Beluluane in Boane district is living in despair following the disappearance of their three sons in a road accident in South Africa, where they had gone in search of better living conditions.
The young men left Maputo on the 4th of this month at the invitation of a cousin who had assured them they would find jobs and better living conditions in the ‘Terra do Rand’ (Rand Land).
Twenty-one-year-old Tacho Manhiça, Rúben Almeida and André Munguambe, both 20, decided to accept their cousin’s invitation, reports Notícias.
On the day of the trip, the cousin, Alberto Munguambe, was unable to travel, so the three left in the car of a friend, who ended up being involved in a road accident in South African.
André Munguambe lost his life at the scene of the accident, while the other two young men were injured and hospitalized.
The Mondlane family is in a predicament, reports Notícias, because they cannot retrieve the deceased’s body in order to bury him, nor do they have any information on the medical status of the two survivors.
According to Rabeca Tembe, mother of still-hospitalized Ruben Almeida, her son was invited by his cousin to work in South Africa and told to find two more people to join a work crew.
“What worries us most is that we do not know the condition of the survivors and do not have access to the deceased’s body to bury it. We have no passports and no money to go to South Africa. The person who took our children is distancing himself from the matter,” she said.
Eduardo Mondlane, the uncle of one of the victims, told Notícias that he has been receiving contradictory information.
“One day they inform us that the young people have only minor injuries and are out of danger, then other days they say they are hospitalized. We’re confused and unsure about the condition of our children. We are concerned about this situation,” he says.
However, Cristina Francisco, mother of Alberto Munguambe, clarified that her son invited his cousins to go to work in South Africa because he wanted to help them.
“There was no evil intent in my son inviting his cousins to go to South Africa. In my neighbourhood here there are many successful young people who were invited to South Africa by my son,” she said.
